Haidong Gumdo refers to the study of the Korean martial art of the sword. It is derived from tactics and techniques used in actual combat with an emphasis on achieving the right mindset for the sword's proper use.

Students of Haidong Gumdo use the mokgeon (wooden sword) for basic practice. Dedicated practitioners learn the following:

 •   kibon (basics)
 •   pumse (forms)
 •   yaksuk daeryun (step sparring)
 •   sparring hada (free sparring)
 •   jingeom gyeokgeom (sparring with live blades)
 •   gigong (energy building exercise)
 •   begi (cutting practice)

Dedicated study of Haidong Gumdo is physically demanding and requires a deep commitment to learning the challenging curriculum. Among the goals students set to achieve are the ability to think fast while on one's feet, the ability to handle challenges with grace, and the opportunity for self-exploration.
